There are several coal washing processes viz. Barrel Process, ZIG Method, Fluidized Bed Process, Heavy Media Bath, Heavy Media Drum and Heavy Media Cyclone. Many of the above mentioned processes are useful for non Indian origin coal. As per the data provided by Coal India Limited (CIL), Heavy Media Cyclone is the most suitable process of washing Indian origin coal because of the specific density of Indian coal which varies from 1.4 - 1.6 (approx.). Hence it cannot be washed by the process which involves water as principal media (as density of water is 1). Henceforth the media should have density within the range 1.4 – 1.6, so as to separate good quality clean coal from reject coal. Therefore SPIL has established a coal washery based on Heavy Media Cyclone Process. After reducing ash content in coal it is supplied to Power Houses, Cement Plants and Steel Industries.
